Extending Manufacturing Execution Capabilities Using Oracle APEX

Enabling Mobile-first, Barcode-driven Work Order Processing with Real-time Oracle SCM Integration

Manufacturing Execution Capabilities

Challenges

A global pharmaceutical organisation partnered with InspireXT to extend its manufacturing execution capabilities by building a mobile-responsive, barcode-enabled application using Oracle APEX. The goal was to simplify and digitise the process of capturing work order execution details, such as Item, Lot, and Quantity, directly from the shop floor via mobile devices.

The existing systems lacked the flexibility and mobility needed to support dynamic manufacturing execution. The client faced several operational bottlenecks:

  • Lack of Mobile-First Interface: Operators needed a responsive mobile application that could work seamlessly with barcode scanners for scanning work orders and related data on the shop floor.
  • Manual Data Capture Delays: There was no easy way to instantly capture operation start times and input real-time details like item and lot quantities, leading to lags and errors in production records.
  • Security and Role-Based Access: Any new system had to honour Oracle SCM’s existing user security setup, ensuring that data access was aligned with organisational roles and policies.

Solution

Oracle APEX-Powered Mobile Manufacturing App

To address these challenges, InspireXT designed and deployed a barcode-enabled mobile application using Oracle APEX. Fully integrated with Oracle SCM Cloud via RESTful web services, the application allowed production operators to:

  • Scan Work Order numbers, Items, Lots, and Quantities directly from a barcode-enabled mobile device.
  • Capture operation start times automatically and feed real-time data into Oracle Cloud systems.
  • Operate through a responsive and clean UI, optimised for mobile devices used in the manufacturing environment.
  • Leverage role-based access control and Oracle SSO, ensuring secure access for authorised users only.

The system streamlined task execution, reduced manual entry points, and improved data accuracy across the production process.

Results

  • Enabled barcode-driven work order execution in under 5 minutes, allowing operators to scan and update all required fields from a single screen.
  • Reduced the number of clicks per operation completion from 10–15 to just 7–8, significantly improving usability on mobile devices.
  • Shortened training time for new users from 2–3 days to just 1 day, thanks to an intuitive, task-specific interface.
  • Improved user satisfaction dramatically, with frontline manufacturing teams reporting faster workflows, fewer errors, and a significantly better experience using the new mobile app.
